Palestine: 137.8 thousand workers in Palestine are paid less than minimum wage

Palestine - The Labour Force Survey issued by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, revealed that about 137.8 thousand workers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, are paid less than 1,450 shekels a month, during the fourth quarter of last year.

This amount is the minimum wage in Palestine, which was approved by the Ministry of Labour, and endorsed by the Council of Ministers, three years ago, leading to extensive debates about its value by the trade unions demanding to raise the amount to 2,200 shekels a month.

According to the survey, 38.6% of workers in the West Bank and Gaza Strip earn less than the minimum wage. 49 thousand workers in the West Bank earn less than the minimum wage, while the average monthly salary is 1047 shekels only, by the end of fourth quarter of last year.

The total workforce in the West Bank till the end of the fourth quarter of last year, reached 844.3 thousand people over the age of 15, which is the minimum age for Employment according to Palestinian law.

The survey noted that 88.7 thousand workers in Gaza Strip earn less than the minimum wage by the end of last year, with the average monthly salary reached 756 shekels.

The total workforce in Gaza Strip, by the end of the fourth quarter of last year, reached 480.7 thousand people, according to Palestinian statistics.

The survey pointed out, that 22.1% of workers belong to labour or professional unions, 13.8% in the West Bank and 41.1% in Gaza Strip.

The survey  mentioned that 20.9% of the workers, do get the end of service benefits or retirement, while 21.5% of them have access to paid annual leave, and 22.1% get paid sick leave, 32.8% of women have access to paid maternity leave.
