Last Monday, workers at Mauritania’s state iron ore mining company SNIM) announced a new wage increase for its workers of 10% in accordance with the agreement signed between the company and employees in 2017. SNIM said that this increase will come into force as of July 1, 2019.

Local media reported that the agreement provides that if the average price of iron reaches $ 90 per tonne for six consecutive months, workers will receive the increase. This agreement is the result of another agreement which did not include any conditions and which could not be applied by SNIM because of the fall in iron prices which led the workers to hold the biggest strike of the history of the company is 63 days.
